It was also a chance to pay homage to the courage of the remarkable sailors in a largely overlooked period of maritime history.

Rick Spilman has spent most of his life around the ships and the sea. Professionally, he has worked as a naval architect (ship designer) for several major shipping lines. An avid sailor, Rick has sailed as volunteer crew on the replica square-riggers "HMS ROSE" and "HMS BOUNTY," as well as sailing on modern and period vessels along the New England coast, the west coast of Florida, the Caribbean, the Great Lakes and the southwest coast of Ireland. I love sailing and kayaking. There is magic to being out in a small boat on big water. I enjoy playing guitar and digeridoo (though not at the same time.) I like writing in my book-lined office in a 19th house not far from the banks of the Hudson River on New York harbor. The sense of history and the echoes of ship's horns from the harbor make is great place to write nautical historical fiction. I love good food of all types, as well as fine wine and aged scotch. I enjoying traveling wherever and whenever I can.

Michael began to cry and turned away shielding his face, but his father grabbed him roughly by the back of his hair, and pulled young Michael’s tear-streaked face towards the sheet-covered form atop the cold steel slab, positioning his face over the clearly defined face beneath. “Now stop it,” Michael’s father screamed in his ear. “You keep cryin’, and I’m gonna ‘give’ you something to cry about alright!”
