A detailed examination of the history of the art of tattoo!
Although tattoos have become a powerful cultural force, more popular than the iPad, Starbucks, and many would argue, William Shatner, its evolution is shrouded in myth, distortion, and innuendo.
TATTOO: A Poorly Researched History is a detailed examination of the history of the art of tattoo. Lazily researched and fully illustrated, the book debunks scientists’ flimsy theories about its Paleolithic-era origins, casually dismisses claims of its existence in ancient Egypt, and relying on little more than hearsay, credits the invention of the small-of-the-back tattoo in 1976 to a redneck named Ricky White.
From valuable advice on how to pick your first tattoo, the benefits of bypassing professional artists in favor of do-it-yourself tattoos, to choosing the right design before beginning a long prison sentence, TATTOO: A Poorly Researched History sets the record straight.

Steve Reynolds
Steve Reynolds is a writer, poet, award-winning photographer, bon vivant, and tattoo historian whose dedication to the art of tattoo has taken him around the world. Born in 1965 outside of Bogota, Colombia, to an industrialist father and socialist mother, Mr. Reynolds’s early childhood in a midscale Boston suburb was one of relative privilege and leisure.
Upon earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Central Florida, young “Stevie Pops” (as his close friends called him) ignored the pleas of his parents to take over the family haberdashery and instead became a freelance vagabond. In 1990, at age twenty-five, a chance meeting with a local tattoo artist sparked a love affair with the craft that continues to this day. Mr. Reynolds's first book, Tattoo Genitalia, sold slightly better than expected.
A black-and-white photographic exhibit, Interstate Rest Stops, was displayed at Philadelphia’s Burney Museum of Art for a record nine months. His one-man off-Broadway show Tattoo/Tat-Me won him the prestigious Stage Left Award and a lunch date with Stanley Tucci. A book of poetry, titled I’m Smarter than You: Poems of Love, is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2017.
