The Great Gambler: Free Historical Kindle eBook

Editor’s Note: THE GREAT GAMBLER is the unbelievable true story of the man who invented paper money.

Book Description: In his colorful historical novel set in 17th and 18th century Europe, Claude Cueni tells the story of the man who invented paper money and stock trading, John Law of Lauriston. He was a gambler, womanizer, and genius who put aside the gambling cards to test his theories on an entire country.

Author’s Inspiration: I was inspired by the diary of Saint-Simon. He mentioned that he met a man, who gambled scientifically and wanted to prove his theories on an entire country and stop the poverty in Europe. He asked Saint-Simon for help to get an appointment in the castle of the sinking Louis XIV. He was an idealist and a visionary whose biggest problem, however, was that he was ahead of his time.

CLAUDE CUENI

I grew up without toys. My fantasy was my nursery. I always invented stories, long before I knew that this is a real profession. My whole life I never wanted to do something else. I never had a plan B. I wrote 10 years without any success. Meanwhile, I wrote many historical novels, thrillers, plays and over 50 screenplays for movies and television. The Great Gambler is the book I love most, because it’s a book about a nonconformist, who never gave up. It shows how similar the crises always are since printing paper money and trading with stocks- one bubble feeds the next bubble.

I grew up in a writing family. I can remember playing on the floor under my mother’s old typing table while she pecked away on her Royal typewriter, turning out the many children’s stories she had published. I’ve won several local and state awards for my writing and two national awards in the Writer’s Digest Competition. I live in San Antonio and visit my beloved home state as often as possible.

Army of the Potomac: Free for Kindle

Editor’s Note: History buffs! Army of the Potomac will engage anyone interested in the human side of the Civil War.

Book Description: Army of the Potomac is a slice of history from the American Civil War, as revealed in the letters of his great grandfather, William Cross Hazelton. The book is an absorbing mix of love letters, historical context, and photographs featuring a man of compassion, humor, and startlingly contemporary moral sensibilities.

Author’s Inspiration: I never met my mother’s grandfather, so I was thrilled to discover that the family still had copies of his Civil War letters. William Cross Hazelton signed up as soon as Lincoln’s call for volunteers went out, and he stayed in the Union cavalry to the bitter end. Fortunately, he wrote letters, more than a hundred of them. Most of them went from behind enemy lines in hostile Virginia to his beloved Fannie, who later became his wife—and my great grandmother. I enjoyed doing the research to provide a context for the letters Hazelton wrote from such famous battlefields as Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Gettysburg. I enjoyed reading about his role in chasing Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth. But mostly I enjoyed getting to know Hazelton himself, one of the quiet heroes of a noisy war.

Peter Beidler

I had always wanted to be a writer, but knew there was no money in it except for the 1%—and those few wrote the kinds of books they did not want to write. So I became a teacher. I earned many teaching awards during my forty years in the English department at Lehigh University. I loved teaching and students, but I loved my summers and sabbaticals also because they gave me a chance to write. I published academic articles (nearly 200) and books (around 25). One of my first projects when I retired was this book.

Spanish Civil War – History of a Battle for Europe’s Soul – Spain’s Great War : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: History buff? Well here’s an informative book about Spain’s great war. It’s clear and concise and will give you the background on World War II.

If you are a history buff or student and want an enjoyable and quick read this is it.

Book Description: The Spanish Civil War is brought to life in this book that considers the major Spanish and international events that surround this 1930s war, a war that was in many ways the real start of World War 2. The book is an indispensable introduction to a key event in modern history and forms part of the Required History series of books.

Fans of George Orwell, Antony Beever, and Niall Ferguson will enjoy SPANISH CIVIL WAR – HISTORY OF A BATTLE FOR EUROPE’S SOUL – SPAIN’S GREAT WAR.

Author’s Inspiration: The reason that we decide to create a book on the Spanish Civil War is that it simply has everything in it and was so relevant to its time, but not enough people know about it. The war was a microcosm of the far greater war that was to follow it. It involved battles between democracy and dictatorship, Fascism and Communism, Germany and the USSR. And that is not even to mention the conflicts that took place within each side in the war, between Communists and Anarchists, Monarchists and Fascists.

This book was written as part of the ´Required History’ series of books.

From the Book: Living in the 21st Century, many of us have fond images of Spain, the country that struts out of Europe’s south-west corner. We associate it with good weather, beautiful beaches, great wine, a vibrant culture, and magnificent art; however, it has not always been seen in such a positive way. For decades in the 19th Century, the country underwent chronic instability in which uprisings and changes of government were an all too regular occurrence. Order was eventually restored in the country, but ultimately did not last, leading to the outbreak of a very brutal war, the Spanish Civil War.

George Levrier-Jones

I’m George, a historian from London in the UK. I have been been fascinated by history for as long as I can remember and have read history books on topics far and wide, including Lord Cochrane’s role in the Latin American Independence movements, Jacques Louis-David’s place in the French Revolution, and the Axumite Kingdom. I was also a keen economic historian during my university days.

More recently, I have spent many of my waking hours reading and researching in order to write and develop podcasts and books. I do this alongside the experienced team at www.itshistorypodcasts.com to ensure that all outputs are of a high-quality.

When not developing history podcasts or drafting books, I help organizations to improve themselves. In my spare time, I like to travel the world, finding out about the history and culture of those lesser-visited regions. I also enjoy art galleries, Peruvian cuisine, good wine, and reading great works of fiction.

Favorite Food: My favorite food has to be a good Argentine steak washed down with some nice red wine.

Favorite Place to Write: I have a small study where I write; however, recently I have had to learn to write outside of my own study in small cafes and even the park. Each ambience provides something different!

Favorite Music to Listen to: I enjoy many types of music, but particularly indie and electronic music, although classical seems to get my ‘creative juices’ flowing.

Favorite TV Show: It has to be Mad Men!
