Shadowborn: Free Epic Fantasy on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Apple
Editor’s Note: In SHADOWBORN, an orphaned girl becomes part of a treasonous plot.
Book Description: Catwin, an orphaned serving girl, is chosen by a ruthless duke to become a Shadow – assassin, spy, and bodyguard – for his niece Miriel. The duke will stop at nothing to become the power behind the throne, and he will kill anyone who stands in his way. Bound together by circumstance and necessity, Miriel and Catwin must move beyond their hatred of one another if they wish to survive the dangers of the court – for the duke’s enemies are now their enemies, and the slightest misstep could cost them the duke’s favor, and their lives.
Author’s Inspiration: The story of a young woman used as a political pawn is an old one, and has been well-covered – but I wanted to tell the story through the eyes of someone who was a nobody to everyone around her, who watched another woman be manipulated and exploited, and who, despite her own circumstances, had a chance to help them both escape.
I grew up reading stories of Alanna and Cimorene, imagining myself slaying dragons – or in Pern, becoming a dragon rider. Books were magical, a portal to other worlds, but as I grew up, these stories and more – Mary Doria Russell’s “The Sparrow,” C.J. Cherryh’s “Cyteen” – also helped me through some of the darkest times of my life. I was inspired by stories of characters who found themselves in horrible situations, yet chose to live their lives honorably, and even find humor and love. As I began writing, it was with the goal that someday my stories could be as much comfort to another person, as my favorite books had been to me.
