Next History: The Girl Who Hacked Tomorrow : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: History running forwards and backwards? NEXT HISTORY explores this idea and it’s simply riveting!

Next History took me on a wild ride to the future, any future I could imagine!

Book Description: Tharcia is in search of her mother for an epic showdown – only she is dead. She uses magic and technology to seek her mother out only to ensare an enchanting oracle, that will reprogram the world as she knows it. What will Tharcia glean from the oracle? Will she change the fate of humanity or her own?

Those who enjoyed Amped, Wired, Ringworld and Angels and Demons will enjoy NEXT HISTORY.

Author’s Inspiration:  What got me started was a review of creation mythologies from a dozen world cultures. I wondered, what if we’ve had these all wrong, what if there were revealed an absolutely *true* version? I saw flaws in the tale of mythical Lilith, and in developing her story, found certain knowledge that could reveal our next history.

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character:  Jennifer Lawrence

From the Book: At first it seems like another Homeland Security mass-fear distraction to deflect attention from the latest wretched unemployment numbers, a short news crawl on the major TV networks: Pentagon in Total Security Lockdown. White-hot on the former 5-color DHS threat scale, meaning we are beyond at-risk and currently under attack, so tune to local AM station, place head between knees and fondly kiss your ass bye-bye. This is replaced minutes later by another crawl, a baffle-worded retraction. Threat Levels Normal. Most viewers chuckle sardonically and let it go. The tweet-blizzard fades, traffic choked off by big-iron military counter-intelligence denials, and that seems to be that.

Lee Baldwin

I am a novelist in Santa Cruz, California. I have waited 25 years to be able to say that, through a half-dozen careers including my own creative copywriting agency in Vancouver (Canada) and Hawaii, operating an advertising business in Honolulu, and 17 years as a human interface designer in Silicon Valley. It was worth it.

My characters often have a quirky edge, because I see human foibles as the launch points of dramatic conflict. That and my musical ear help me shape dialog and narrative into rhythms of dramatic reveal, turning points, and cadences.

Escape fiction generally satisfies the reader’s hunger for vicarious experiences. You know, the cool stuff. Such as glamorous adventure, epic situations, sex and romance, and overcoming great obstacles. I get fiendish pleasure whenever I can spice these situations with wry humor.

I think about plot and character during long walks on the Rio Del Mar beach. I write at home. I fly gliders and drive race cars, which gives my adventure scenes realism. I listen to (and play) jazz keyboards. I goof off.

IXEOS (The Ixeos Trilogy) : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: Teenagers are full of talent – playing musical instruments, lacrosse, painting – but saving the Earth from aliens? Let’s hope so!

IXEOS is a thrill packed ride from beginning to end!

Book Description: Teenagers from our earth are brought to Ixeos, an alternate earth that has been taken over by humanoid aliens. While most have been killed, the remaining humans have been enslaved or live as fugitives on the largely desolate planet. Can the outsiders free the rebel leader Darian and rescue the human race before they are destroyed?

Those who enjoyed The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narina will enjoy IXEOS.

Author’s Inspiration:  There were two – I read a National Geographic article on the almost-200 miles of tunnels under Paris, and found it fascinating. I knew that would be in a story one day. Secondly, my daughter and I encountered, then lost, a flock of ducks on a kayak outing last summer. We started texting each other crazy stories about “where the ducks went.” I finally put the two together, and the foundation of IXEOS was born!

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: Logan Lerman (Marty), Liam Hemsworth (Clay), Jennifer Lawrence (Neahle)

From the Book: They walked the next half hour in silence, unwilling to ask any more questions for which “it’s complicated” was the answer. And they were all mulling over the crazy idea that they were in Paris, France, only not their Paris, France, with people who said they’d followed ducks to another world or dimension years before. They would write these two strangers off as crazy except that here they were, walking down a convoluted succession of tunnels, striding through open rooms with graffiti-painted walls, scooting around reservoirs full of dark water, being led by those strangers who were carrying torches and who seemed to know exactly where they were going.

Jennings Wright

Jennings grew up in a small Florida town, spending hours running along the Indian River being chased by pirates, turning into a mermaid, and generally causing inciting imaginary mayhem. Much later, after being a wife, mom, business owner, and non-profit founder, she rediscovered the joys of imaginary mayhem and hasn’t stopped since. She’s published four books to date, with many more on the drawing board. All her stories start with interesting locations and fun facts, and she doesn’t worry about genre til she’s done. When she’s not writing or editing, she’s usually hanging out with her family, doing anything on the water, or traveling.

Favorite Food: Sushi is my favorite food, and the only one I crave when I’m traveling places you don’t want to eat sushi (like Africa).

Favorite Place to Write: I generally write in our sunroom or my office, but when the weather is nice, I love to be outside.

Favorite Music: I don’t listen to music while I write, and my tastes are very eclectic, from Jimmy Buffett (the Florida girl in me) to Black Eyed Peas.

Favorite TV show: I usually watch either police procedural shows (Castle, NCIS, The Mentalist, Bones) or Food Network shows like Chopped, although I like Frasier, M*A*S*H and Seinfeld, too.

CONNECTED : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: CONNECTED is the best combination of science, adventure, cliffhangers and lust all tied up into a well constructed story that makes it very difficult to put down.

I found the story to be very original and thought provoking.

Book Description: CONNECTED is a speculative fiction mystery thriller with touches of science and philosophy. It begins with a brilliant physicist trying to comprehend his brother’s suicide. Then it quickly moves into the investigation of many more suicides which takes him on a quest to understand this mind-altering video

Those who enjoy Michael Crichton and William Gibson will want to read CONNECTED.

Author’s Inspiration:  Years ago, at university, a fellow student had a breakdown and was admitted to the local psychiatric hospital. A few, who knew him well, went to visit and reported that he’d subsequently lost the plot and was now gabbling incomprehensibly of having found the answer to life, the universe and everything. While most people seemed consumed with sadness and pity at this, my first thought was, “What if he really had discovered some universal truth?” Although I never seriously believed that he had, it was on that day that the seed of an idea lodged in my young brain – a seed that in the summer of 2002 would germinate into the drafting of the first three chapters of CONNECTED from a cabin in the French Alps.

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: There are two main characters really: Peter and Doug. Somehow, I can see Colin Firth in the role of Peter, but nobody springs to mind for Doug, so suggestions are welcome.

From the Book: As the coffin was lowered, the sky darkened and a gust of wind ripped through the churchyard, stirring the ancient trees and momentarily lifting the masks of reverent solemnity gathered around the open grave. Peter studied the faces with a detached sense of curiosity. How well, he wondered, had these people really known his brother? His gaze came to rest on Isabelle. Even now – even through the tears – she looked beautiful. He tried to imagine the feelings welling behind those big brown eyes: anguish tinged with guilt, denial, loneliness – perhaps even anger. He shivered. His own feelings were somehow suppressed. His brother was in a box, about to be sealed away for an eternity in the damp, peaty earth beneath his feet, and yet he felt strangely calm, the whole service having washed over him like a dream from which he might awaken at any moment.

Simon Denmen

Born in Eastbourne, to retired parents, Simon Denman grew up alternately on the beaches of a succession of English seaside towns, and in the historic, if somewhat austere boarding school of Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, Sussex.

After graduating from the University of Essex with a degree in Electronic Engineering, he has spent longer than he likes to admit in the IT networking, communications, and Internet security industries, gradually moving from technical to marketing and management roles. During this time, he moved from the UK to Paris, back to the UK, over to Munich, across to the French Riviera, and finally back to England.

Far more importantly during this period, he was blessed with two beautiful and talented daughters, now at University themselves, and, in remarriage, the love of the most wonderful woman for whom a man could wish. While he no longer plays rugby, Simon is a moderately accomplished player of Jazz and classical trumpet, which he blows enthusiastically with any band or group that’ll have him. Any remaining time is spent reading and writing.

Favorite food: Since meeting my wife, who is from Istanbul, I think Turkish food has become my new favourite, but I’m still very fond of Italian and Japanese cuisine.

Favorite Place to Write: I can write anywhere really, but since I occasionally suffer from back pain, I find lying on the living room rug, propped up on my elbows for an hour or so at a time, can be quite effective at straightening me out again.

Music tastes: I love all music from classical, through jazz and right up to contemporary singer / songwriters such as KT Tunstall, Katie Melua and the late Amy Winehouse.

Favorite TV show:  House MD.

Amanda’s Eyes : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: If you are looking for a science fiction mystery with a dash or romance, then look no further than AMANDA’S EYES.

Amanda’s Eyes opens with immediate sense of mystery with intrigue that mounts throughout the story.

Book Description: Think what you see is what you get? Better think again. Crime can’t hide from THESE baby blues! AMANDA’S EYES is a novel that seeks to answer to the question, what if we could see the monster behind the mask?

Those who like J.D. Robb and Sue Grafton will like AMANDA’S EYES.

Author’s Inspiration:  I enjoy exploring human nature, and this one gave me a chance to explore our penchant for appearance over reality; the tension between law enforcement and media; what it takes to do the right thing when you know doing the right thing might cost you; and what happens when cynicism comes face to face with there are more things under heaven, Horatio.

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: Angelina Jolie

From the Book: I guess you could call them hitmen. You could also call Einstein a math whiz. Think ruthless. Think unstoppable. Think killers so proficient “caught the ferry” was fast replacing “bought the farm” in common usage, and you have the Ferrymen in a nutshell.

Kathy DiSanto

I’m an introvert, so I do a lot of living inside my head. Given my overactive imagination, that life gets pretty exciting at times. As a kid, I was constantly making up fantastical stories, which I made my younger friends act out. (Several tales included the ability to fly, but those recreations didn’t end so well, so I had to drop that idea. For the time being.)
I first discovered the joy of writing in high school. Can’t remember exactly what I wrote, but there was a lot of frenzy involved. I know this, because I misspelled the word often enough to frustrate my English teacher, Mr. Sanchez.
I started writing professionally at age 46, when my sister gave me the idea for my first romance novel, FOR LOVE OR MONEY. The rest, as they say, is history.
Favorite food: Ice cream, hands down
Favorite place to write: My study, with the windows open
Favorite music: the Vinegar Creek Constituency, and indie roots band
Favorite TV show: NCIS
Favorite recreation: walking my dog, Molly
