Editor’s Note: We’ve all felt like an outsider sometime in our lives. We all haven’t experienced astral projects that let us skip over the awkward times of ages 13-16, but wouldn’t that have been nice?
A perfect YA book for tweens that their parents would enjoy too!
Book Description: 13 year old Roxie wanted to hang with the 8th grade popular kids (‘peacocks’), so she invites them to her Halloween birthday party. She gets some unexpected gifts and finds out how complicated being a high school ‘peacock’ can be.
Readers who like Fairest or The Fallen Star Series will like 13 ON HALLOWEEN.
Author’s Inspiration: “I got the idea from lots of places. I’ve always wanted to write a story about Halloween. One of my favorite books my girls and I read together when they were little was The Witch’s Hat by Tony Johnston, illustrated by Margot Tomes. In legend, Halloween is the time that the veil is thinnest between the spiritual world and the mortal world and that idea is fascinating to me. That’s where the idea for the shadow world came from for the Shadow Series. The idea that there were these alter ego beings that were trying to invade our world. Plus, I grew up where there was a local ghost story that made the idea of ghosts and spirits very real when I was young. My mother is half Irish and she told some amazing tales about “The Great Beyond.” I also volunteered at an elementary school helping children learn how to read. They were an inspiration for some of the characters too.”
