DONALD WELLS

I started writing back in 1988, but only really became serious about it in 2011. In the years in between, I worked as a real estate salesman, sold life insurance, worked in retail management, and drove a truck. Truck driving actually paid better than the other jobs, and also allowed me time to think about what to write.

These days, all I do is write, and it’s the best job I’ve ever had.

Owned: Free for Kindle, Nook, Apple, and Kobo

Editor’s Note: OWNED is a short story collection centered around the theme of murder. This deviant collection is perfect for fans of psychological crime fiction.

Each tale was exciting as the last.

Book Description: Twin siblings combine forces in a cooperative scheme; an animal lover unleashes his vengeance; and a psychiatrist faces the consequences of violating a client’s trust. Get up close and personal with characters hellbent on settling scores, righting wrongs and exacting revenge–once their desire to kill is ignited.

Fans of Roald Dahl, Stephen King, Patricia Highsmith will love this book.

Author’s Inspiration: The last story in this collection was inspired by the cover image. I found the image very stimulating and vibrant–and it transported me to “the scene of the crime” in my mind straight away… I have always had a keen interest in taboo topics such as sex and murder. Crime fiction is a great genre to explore taboo topics!

Editor’s Note: Alex Cross meets Sherlock Holmes in PANIC – and neither can agree on anything.

The storyline was interesting and compelling. I didn’t want it to end.

Queen Bitch: Free Kindle Mystery

Editor’s Note:  Queen Bitch is a runaway freight train, and the reader is tied to the tracks.

This is a good book, I’d like to see more of Justin Harwood’s work.

Book Description: When a wanted child killer suddenly throws himself off a building, Detective Fuller thinks it’s a routine case of killer’s remorse. But when things don’t add up, Fuller starts on a collision course with a decision that, in his twenty years on the force, he thought he could never make.

Author’s Inspiration: Nothing beats a fast moving, hardboiled crime thriller, nothing. So I wrote one.

From the Book: The flash from the gun was muffled, along with the sound, by the silencer. The bullet left the barrel and sliced through the cartilage of the right ear, removing the top and the middle shell, a spurting pulse of blood and gristle. From the ear, the bullet drilled through the leather backed chair and lodged into the white drywall, after passing through a small, exquisite Van Gogh. The suction from the bullet popped the ear drum and blood spurted from the hole, in a flood of deep purple. Klaas went to scream, but only a high pitched squeak came from his mouth.

Justin Harwood

While, these days I live on the West Coast of New Zealand, I spent 14 years living in London and New York, where I discovered the great New York crime writers and experienced first hand the grittiness of probably the greatest location in book and movie history. New York City is a major part of my writing, and still inspires me while I walk my dog on the faraway New Zealand beach. A good crime book is one that makes your palms sweat and your heart beat, and this buzz is my inspiration for writing. My bookcase (and now my kindle) is littered with hard hitting paperbacks that I’ve lent to friends and family over the years. And yes, a great novel is great, but sometimes a shot of fast, dirty crime is just what the doctor ordered.

Eyes of the Predator: The Pickham County Murders : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: This intense chilling tale will have you sleeping with the lights on!

The story captured me immediately and kept me turning the pages.

Book Description: A serial killer stalking on one of his “runarounds” has come to rural south Georgia. Expert , like any predator, at selecting the weak and vulnerable he identifies young Lyn as his next victim. The hunt is on as George Mackey and his GBI counterparts track the killer across the Georgia landscape. The only question is, will the find him in time?

Fans of James Patterson, Elmore Leonard, and John Grisham will like EYES OF THE PREDATOR : THE PICKHAM COUNTY MURDERS.

Author’s Inspiration: The Hunters Series deals with the various motivations for murder. ‘Eyes of the Predator’ focuses on the predatory nature of serial killers and the psychology of predator and prey. The seed for the book was planted when I was fourteen years old by the abduction of a young newlywed at a local mall in 1965 Atlanta. Subsequently, I became a police officer in the Atlanta area and was exposed in a very real way to the victims of various types of abuse, as well as the abusers.

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: Billy Bob Thornton as Leyland Torkman. Kevin Costner as George Mackey.

From the Book: He waited patiently, a lion in the grass at the edge of the herd. The herd grazed and moved around him and copulated and birthed and played and fought, and was completely unaware of his presence.

When the moment came, he would spring into relentless, merciless, brutal action. He would be filled. For his prey, it would be terrible.

Glenn Trust

I have worked in a number of fields and trades, from construction to law enforcement and then the corporate world. My exposure to people with widely diverse backgrounds has shown me the good and bad in all of us. I take that as a fact of life. Very few of us are completely good and even fewer are totally evil. But good and evil do exist in the human psyche.

I try to bring that understanding and reality to my characters. They are smudged and dirtied by life, but that just makes the heroes more heroic in my view. If anything motivates me as writer, it is this effort to bring reality and truth to the characters in my writing.

Favorite Food: Everything. Partial to steak and beer

Favorite Place to Write: Quietly at home in my office. The Ruby Mountains are just outside the window.

Favorite Music: All music, although I grew up in the south and played in a country band for a number of years, so Country Music is what I am listening to more often than not.

TV Show – Watch the History Channel a lot. As far as a series goes it is my favorite is probably ‘Justified’ the FX series based on Elmore Leonard’s Raylan Givens series of novels.

The Good Lawyer : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: Excitement and suspense run thoughout this legal thriller. This is sure to get your blood pumping and heart racing!

This is a terrific story written with a fresh and unforced prospective.

Book Description: The Spiderman rapist is on the loose and an ambitious young Legal Aid Attorney tackles his biggest case ever-a teacher’s aide accused of molesting three of his students. Armed with a firm belief in his client’s innocence, he knocks the pegs out from under the prosecution’s case. When one of the children turns up dead, the young lawyer discovers that his client may be strangely connected to the Spiderman.

Readers who enjoyed The Racketeer, Defending Jacob, The Fifth Witness and Gone Girl will enjoy THE GOOD LAWYER.

Author’s Inspiration:  As a Legal Aid Attorney in the South Bronx in 1982, I handled the grittiest of cases. These cases didn’t just include the run-of-the-mill burglaries and robberies or drug deals at a time when miles of square blocks there were leveled to rubble and burnt out buildings seemed to be everywhere. There were much more horrible crimes there. And I was…… defender of all of it.

Then a case came through the system. Headlines. No prior arrest record. Horrible crime. He could be innocent.

This is why I became a lawyer- to champion for the innocent man.

And so life set me up for the greatest fall ever. Years later I couldn’t shake what I had done, so I wrote it down and it became “The Good Lawyer.”

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: Bradley Cooper

From the Book:  My hand slipped from the doorframe and I was pulled into the apartment.

For a second my right arm was free.

I pulled Sallie’s knife from its leather calf holster. The body on top of me, with the apparent instincts of a wrestler, reached for my free hand.

He gripped my wrist, but not before I cut deep into his leg.

A massive blow thundered down on my chest; his fist, in turn, smacked the side of my head.

Everything went dark. But I could hear. Hear my own death. Like prison doors slowly slamming shut in my head.

Smoke : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: Nostalgia runs throughout this mysterious novel with a classic noir private detective pitted against mobsters. It made us want to grab our trenchcoat and fedora!

The vivid dialogue captures the climate of the 1930s and suceeds in keeping the reader guessing.

Book Description: Private Eye McDonough is used to solving crimes the easy way, by persuading his copper pals to give him the low down. But when a newspaperman in 1930s St. Paul becomes the victim of a gang hit, and his pretty widow wants to know why, things get complicated.

Those who enjoy Mickey Spillane, John D. MacDonald, and Robert B. Parker, will like SMOKE.

Author’s Inspiration:  I was inspired by the great city of St. Paul, Minnesota, and its colorful early-twentieth-century history of be home to countless mobsters.

Bruce Rubenstein

Bruce Rubenstein has published hundreds of true crime stories in weeklies and monthly magazines. In 1991 he received the Chicago Bar Association’s Herman Kogan Media Award for his Chicago Magazine article about the conviction of four Mexican immigrants for a quadruple homicide (dubbed “The Milwaukee Avenue Massacre” by the Sun Times) that they did not commit. They were serving the 12th year of their sentences of life without the possibility of parole when his article came out. As a result of his article the Governor of Illinois pardoned them. An anthology of his crime stories, titled Greed Rage and Love Gone Wrong, was published by the Univ. Of Minnesota Press in 2004. He won the Minnesota State Arts Council award for fiction in 1979, and published short stories in little magazines in the 70s and 80s. His story, Smoke got In My eyes, written for the Akashic Books’ anthology, Twin Cities Noir (2006), was nominated for the Shamus Award. His short fiction has recently appeared in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. His book about a notorious art theft, titled The Rockwell Heist will be published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press in March 2013.

Blood Orchids (The Lei Crime Series) : Free Kindle Book

Editor’s Note: Like a good dish, this novel’s got it all – a fast paced suspense filled mystery with a twist of romance and Hawaiian flavor!

I found Blood Orchids to be a captivating story with engaging characters in well described settings.

Book Description: Hawaii is a wonderful place to visit, but in this story, there is a killer out there who is preying on police officer Lei Texeira. She has a haunted pas that surfaces in the brutual death of two teenagers on Hilo. Will she be able to find this killer or will she become the next victim?

Those who enjoyed the J.D. Robb’s In Death series will enjoy BLOOD ORCHIDS.

Author’s Inspiration:  The Lei Crime Series is based on author’s experience as a mental health therapist dealing with the challenges of life in paradise and unfulfilled dreams of solving crime.

Actor Who Would Play the Main Character: Grace Park

From the Book: Drowning isn’t pretty, even in paradise. The girl’s features were bloated by water and nibbled on by wildlife. She lay half embedded in silty mud, naked as a seal carcass. Long hair that might have been blonde wrapped around her like seaweed, one sparkly hair tie still in place on the side of her head.

Leilani Texeira grimaced at the sulphurous smell of the mud as she stepped into it, shiny regulation shoes disappearing, and squatted to inspect the body. After three years on the force in Hawaii she’d seen several drowned corpses, and had learned to stay detached as she looked for any signs of violence. Still, she was thankful for the small mercy of the girl’s closed eyes.

Her partner Pono’s voice was a bass drone interspersed with static as he called in the discovery on the radio. Lei stayed on her haunches, her eyes slowly surveying the entire overgrown area of the small county park. Invasive christmasberry bushes and clumps of tall pili grass competed along the unkempt banks. Midmorning sun leached reluctantly from under cloud cover as she spotted what looked like a bobbing coconut a few yards out. Lei glanced around—no palm trees ringed the pond.

She pushed her pant legs up and splashed forward into murky water warm as blood, clots of yellowish algae dotting the surface.
